Small Windows: Folktales of Old China by Fang Yuan edited by Timothy D. Liebermann and David L.E. Watt (185 pages, including 10 original pen-and-ink illustrations.) ISBN 7-81029-942-5 /H119 Fang Yuan is a friend of ours in Xiangtan. Years ago, he traveled around China, collecting folktales from various minority ethnic groups. He translated and adapted the stories into English, and I edited and prepared the manuscript. The book was published in June 2001. Small Windows is a collection of original Chinsese folk literature, containing 15 tradional tales and 3 festival tales. In the words of the author, "it is one humble attempt to assist the western reader to understand the Chinese character and the 4,000-year history that shaped it. It is my hope that these small windows will help us see beyond the old walls of separation and bring us all closer together." |
Status: The book was printed in 2001, but was not distributed widely. A "school edition" of the book, containing slightly revised versions of five of the tales, was published in July 2004 and is being distributed in parts of China as part of the school curriculum for Chinese students of English. We are looking for a competent distributor outside of China. If you happen to know of a publisher that handles this kind of topic, please feel free to contact me or to pass along this URL.
