Sierra Leone has a distinguished history of postage stamps, both as a British
colony and more recently as an independent nation. In 1964 it produced the
world's first self-adhesive postage stamps, trimmed to the shape of the
country and labeled as "Land of Iron and Diamonds." They were published with
overprints for the New York World's Fair and a griffin emblem, and were later
overprinted with a commemoration of John Kennedy, who had initiated the Peace
Corps.
