path to knowledge Anne gave this lecture on December 5, 2001 to a group of Chinese teachers and students at our university. She wanted to give them a new way to think about learning. The older educational system is dominated by the philosophy of cramming information into the student's mind through drills (verbal, not steel) and memorization.

To meet the challenges of this changing world, new educational methods must be adopted. We must acknowledge the individual worth of each student, so he may develop his potential in a positive, supportive environment. We must also stress the importance of moral principles, so he can make wise choices and contribute to a better society.

Everyone learns more easily and thoroughly in an interactive classroom environment. The biggest challenge of speaking a new language is overcoming our insecurities. When language exercises are put into an entertaining format, students participate without feeling self-conscious, and suddenly find themselves successful.

This lecture discusses individual learning styles for oral English. Examples are given of games for word association, sequencing, pronunciation, and task-oriented (situational) activities.
